Session Notes 02/17/2005

During this session, we talked more about the Melodic Minor Scale and it's associated modes. Click here for a graphic showing the modes generated by both the Major Scale and the ascending Melodic Minor Scale.

Then, we looked at the ii7b5-V7alt-i progression in (thanks Dave) the key of b minor. We practiced each scale together and in pairs, then individually improvised over each scale. Then, we took the V7alt-i progression (4 measures each chord/scale) and improvised over that, attempting to hear the strong feeling of "tension-release" afforded by the progression. Click here for a graphic of the ii7b5-V7alt-i progression in c minor.

Finally, we played through "Softly, As In A Morning Sunrise", and "Maiden Voyage" (both slightly modified arrangements by Andy Lavern). These tunes gave us a chance to play in minor with the melodic minor scales.
