Theory

We introduced intervals and talked about the importance of being able to hear/distinguish intervals. Did some ear training using Perfect intervals (1st, 4th, 5th, 8th).

We also discussed theoretical vs. auditory applications of concepts. e.g. we hear an augmented 2nd as the same interval as a minor 3rd, but they look different on paper...

CMS Combo-Woodrich

Teamwork/ Group Improvisation:

  • Worked with horn players to use the rhythm section effectively for building climaxes and gaining support under solos.
  • Worked with rhythm section to the same end: primarily, dynamics, responsiveness to patterns, melodic and emotional contours and contrasts.

Important for the soloists was learning to "hand -off" ideas to each other and to finish solos. Side trips were on straightening out 8ths for BeBop at faster tempos and some thoughts on use of space and lyrical ideas as opposed to a constant stream of 8th note cliches.

Next time I would like to aim at making distinctions between triple and duple subdivisions; and especially double-time 16th notes vs plain 16 notes, and then to begin developing motivic thinking. We need to also work on applying scales to chord progressions.

RFHS Combo - Fox

We spent some time practicing scales for and improvising over each of these tunes:

  • Blues Shuffle in Bb
  • Impressions

I'd also (per Wood above) like to address the swing concept in this group next time.
